One physician’s faxed order to discontinue hydrocodone, marketed as Anexsia, was misread by the pharmacist as an order to discontinue Arixtra, an anticoagulant. Another doctor intended to electronically order clonidine, an antihypertensive, but accidentally ordered the sedative clonazepam because both appeared as “CLON” on the computer screen.

In a recent Harvard study involving 85,000 women, 61 percent of the diabetes cases that developed during the 16-year study period could be attributed to excess weight. But you don’t have to be obese, according to scientists at Kaiser Permanent Center for Health Research Northwest in Portland, Oregon. “In our study, there were moderately and even mildly overweight people who got diabetes before age 45,” says lead researcher Teresa Hillier, M.D. “The risk of early on set diabetes rose by 6 percent for every five to eight pounds of excess weight,” she says.

Studies link pill to increased heart risks; but positives still outweigh negatives

Congress Weighs Stricter Boot-Camp Rules

The House Committee on Education and Labor heard emotional testimony about abuses at so-called boot-camp programs for troubled youth, and members vowed to step up regulation of the programs, USA Today reported Oct. 11.

A Florida jury last week acquitted guards and a nurse of manslaughter charges over the death of a 14-year-old boot-camp resident, but Congress heard many other stories about children who died while enrolled in similar programs. “I can’t think of any testimony that we have heard in this committee that has caused a greater sense of anger and sorrow,” said committee chairman Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.).
