Insurers see veterans’ care as growth business

When Health Net held a conference call to discuss its third-quarter earnings, investment analysts pointed out one particular growth industry — covering mental health services for military members and their families.

Health Net President and CEO Jay Gellert agreed. He called the demand, fueled by the large number of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, a “positive surprise, which I think we anticipate to be ongoing.”

Pain care urged as a priority for wounded, returning veterans

Washington — Wounded veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are surviving injuries that would have been fatal in earlier wars. That’s the good news. But these serious wounds also are causing a great deal of pain, which, if untreated, can trigger a cascade of life-disrupting changes, according to pain experts speaking at an Oct. 30 Capitol Hill briefing.

Quarter of Homeless are Veterans, with More Coming from Iraq, Afghanistan

A study by the National Alliance to End Homelessness finds that about one in four homeless Americans are veterans, and that more veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are starting to show up in homeless shelters and soup kitchens, the Associated Press reported Nov. 7.

Veterans comprise about 11 percent of the general U.S. population.
