Vaccine court’s ruling adds to confusion over autism link

Washington — Physicians are being called upon, once again, to address concerns about the safety of childhood vaccines. This time families’ queries are driven by a special vaccine court’s decision to pay for the care of a young girl injured by vaccines.

The court ruled last fall that 9-year-old Hannah Poling’s underlying mitochondrial disorder was aggravated by the shots which she received as a toddler and resulted in brain dysfunction and “features of autism spectrum disorder.”

Flu vaccine recommended for all kids, teens

In an attempt to reduce influenza among children and adolescents — and the adults with whom they come in contact — the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, at a February meeting, endorsed influenza vaccination for all younger than 18.

Because of increasingly stable supplies and more science showing the vaccine’s benefit, ACIP has been slowly expanding the number of people recommended to receive it. This recent recommendation adds 30 million to the list.

Vaccines get a boost: Global market increases profitability of making vaccine

Vaccines are hot. “The global vaccine market is set to double by the year 2016, fueled by unprecedented product innovations and global recognition of the benefits of immunization,” said Michael D. Decker, MD, MPH, vice president for scientific and medical affairs at vaccine manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur, USA.

Researchers Bind Cocaine to Cholera to Create Vaccine

Researchers in Texas are binding cocaine to deactivated cholera proteins to create a vaccine that fools the body into attacking cocaine molecules, thus making the drug ineffective, the Associated Press reported Jan. 1.

Researchers Tom and Therese Kosten of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston recently requested Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to begin a multi-institutional trial of the vaccine, as early as this spring.
