A growing number of high schools nationally are using breath tests to detect alcohol use among students attending football games, dances, and other extracurricular activities, USA Today reported Oct. 15.
Bill Judge, an attorney who advises schools on the use of drug testing, says that thousands of schools are now conducting alcohol screens using Breathalyzers and other breath tests. “It’s increased dramatically,” he said. KHN Solutions, which markets Breathalyzers, says orders from high schools have risen 120 percent annually over the past four years, and other sellers also report rising orders.

This is a fascinating idea that was sent to me by Cat Laine over at AIDG. I know I am always raving about their blog, but really if you haven’t managed to check it out - go over there right now. All drug addicts face stigma, but the burden is especially high for crack users, who often cannot even get into homeless shelters, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported Sept. 27.
In Toronto, about half of all homeless individuals say they are regular crack users. But crack users are “very unwelcome in many places, including some services for the homeless,” said researcher Erika Khandor. “There is a real lack of supports and services for them, and they do feel isolated even from existing services for homeless people.”

How clean are your hands? How about the person who just shook yours?
Several presentations at last month’s Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy in Chicago suggested that people not only wash their hands less often than they say they do, but the number who really do appears to be decreasing. Also, improving hand hygiene in the health care setting saves money.

A “substantially growing number of patients” are being injured or killed by the prescription drugs they are taking under doctors’ orders, according to a new report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices.
Reuters reported Sept. 10 that researcher Thomas Moore and colleagues said that reports of such deaths and injuries have more than doubled between 1998 and 2005, largely due to problems with painkillers and immune-system boosters.
