Illinois bill says stores can’t have both clinics and tobacco

Depressed medical residents make six times more medication errors than residents who are not depressed, according to a U.S. study published online Feb. 7 in the British Medical Journal.

“Depression is a significant problem for residents as well as for their patients,” said lead study author Amy Fahrenkopf, MD, MPH. “The fact that it’s a problem for both needs to be addressed.”

Characteristics of Adolescents Who Use Cannabis But Not Tobacco

A $10-million grant to the Canadian Center on Substance Abuse will support a national campaign to discourage illicit-drug use among 10- to 24-year-olds, the Canwest News Service? reported Jan. 31.

Canada’s new Drug Prevention Strategy for Youth (PDF) aims to reduce youth drug-use rates, delay the onset of use, reduce drug-use frequency, and cut the use of multiple substances among those who do take drugs. It is part of the conservative government’s National Anti-Drug Strategy released in the fall and will include a two-year media campaign.

Book Traces History of Alcohol and Tobacco Marketing

University of Michigan professor Pamela Pennock has penned “Advertising Sin and Sickness,” which explores the history of alcohol and tobacco marketing between 1950 and 1990, the Michigan Journal reported Jan. 15.

“My purpose was never to be a supporter or opponent of the industries or of the movements to restrict them, but to seek answers to questions about what these struggles and controversies can tell us about recent American health and consumer politics and business power,” said Pinnock, whose book includes passages on the political, religious, and social dimensions of alcohol and tobacco product marketing and control.

‘Air Rage’ Blamed on Alcohol, Tobacco

A British study concludes that a 62 percent increase in “air-rage” incidents among airline passengers can largely be traced to misbehavior among drinkers and smokers, the Daily Mail reported Dec. 6.

The British Civil Aviation Authority’s (CAA) report concluded that “the main contributory factors to disruptive behavior were alcohol and tobacco,” including violent drunks and passengers who refused to obey smoking bans. Reports of air-rage incidents have quadrupled since 2002, the agency noted, partly because airlines have adopted a “zero tolerance” policy towards such offenders.
