Police Should Pay for Seized Pot, Colo. Couple Says

A Colorado judge ruled last year that police illegally seized 39 medical-marijuana plants from a Fort Collins couple, who are now in court seeking reimbursement for the value of the plants.

The Denver Channel reported Jan. 17 that James and Lisa Masters said that after a county judge dismissed all criminal charges against them and ordered the police to return the plants, they received the crop back dry, brittle and moldy. The Drug Enforcement Administration estimated that each plant was worth roughly $1,000.

Report: Schools Can’t, Shouldn’t Shoulder Prevention Burden

Most American kids receive some drug education in the classroom, but a new report contends that schools should not be relied upon to prevent early use of alcohol and other drugs and its consequences.

The report, “Prevention Education in America’s Schools: Findings and Recommendations from a Survey of Educators,” noted that 37 states require schools to teach students about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. However, “Teachers don’t have the time, training or other resources needed to do the job effectively, regardless of what the state-mandated standards say,” according to the report by Join Together and Communitas Online.

Va. Group’s Sticker Campaign Aimed at ‘Shoulder-Tap’ Buyers, Parents

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is working with a task force of high-school students and parents to place stickers on packages of beer, wine coolers and other alcoholic beverages warning against buying alcohol for minors, the Washington Post reported Sept. 13.

Stop-sign shaped stickers will be placed on products at 50 participating retailers in the Alexandria area. The “sticker shock” campaign is intended to prevent underage drinking.
