Liquor Prices Could Be Pegged to Alcohol Content

January 24th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

The University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research has proposed that the Canadian province of British Columbia set prices for beer, wine and liquor based on each product’s alcohol content, the Vancouver Sun reported Jan. 23.

Tim Stockwell, director of the center, said that products with more potential for social harm should be priced higher. “Every day in the paper you read about drink-driving problems, fetal alcohol syndrome, alcoholism and homelessness,” Stockwell. “The science is very clear that what the population does as a whole with regard to drinking affects how many people die each year, how many hospital admissions there are, how many road crashes, how many deformed babies. The list goes on and on, and on.”

Raise Alcohol Prices to Prevent Abuse, U.K. Doctors Say

December 21st, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

The president of Great Britain’s Royal College of Physicians said that alcohol education efforts have failed and that the only way to prevent excessive drinking is to raise alcohol prices, ban alcohol advertising, and reduce availability, Reuters reported Dec. 21.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) says that the prices of cocaine and methamphetamine have risen four straight quarters in the U.S., possibly indicating a reduction in supply, USA Today reported Nov. 7.

Since last October, the DEA said, estimated cocaine prices have risen 47 percent, while methamphetamine prices have risen 84 percent. The estimates are based on DEA data on seized drugs. “I don’t think anyone is prepared to declare victory, but this is certainly encouraging news,” said Scott Burns of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) says a drug-interdiction campaign by Mexico’s government has cut cocaine supplies in 26 U.S. cities and resulted in a 29-percent price increase on the streets, USA Today reported Sept. 13.

The DEA said that the crackdown by the Calderon government in Mexico has also resulted in a decline in cocaine purity in the U.S. cities since September 2006. Cocaine prices are the highest since April 2005, when DEA began tracking price and purity.
