Physicians press lawmakers to stop Medicare pay cuts

April 14th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Washington — Nearly 1,000 physicians convened in Washington, D.C., earlier this month to help lobby lawmakers on Medicare payment reform in the face of a tight timeline and an even tighter budget.

Although the American Medical Association’s National Advocacy Conference covered a range of health policy issues, its main focus was on patching the Medicare payment system that otherwise will cause a 10.6% reduction in doctor pay starting July 1. The event featured congressional speakers and an opportunity for more than 100 physician and medical student attendees to meet with lawmakers following an April 2 rally on Capitol Hill.

Depressed residents make more drug errors

March 2nd, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Depressed medical residents make six times more medication errors than residents who are not depressed, according to a U.S. study published online Feb. 7 in the British Medical Journal.

“Depression is a significant problem for residents as well as for their patients,” said lead study author Amy Fahrenkopf, MD, MPH. “The fact that it’s a problem for both needs to be addressed.”

CALPIRG Expresses Deep Disappointment in Senate??™s Failure to Pass Health Care Reform

CALPIRG Expresses Deep Disappointment in Senate’s Failure to Pass Health Care Reform

We are deeply disappointed in the lack of action by the Senate Health Committee today. The failure to vote for health care reform was in effect a vote for the status quo.

Our current health care system, with skyrocketing costs and six million uninsured Californians, is unacceptable and unsustainable. To add to current problems, today the Senate Pro Tem and many others noted that in the near term, health care could get worse, as state coverage programs could face up to $1.1 billion in cuts in the upcoming budget. The faltering economy makes health insurance all the more tenuous for many California residents, bolstering the need for reform even more.

U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey is asking Congress to reverse a decision by the U.S. Sentencing Commission to apply reduced sentences for crack-cocaine offenses retroactively, Reuters reported Feb. 6.

The commission recently voted unanimously to reduce the crack penalties to bring them more into line with those for powdered-cocaine offenses and to apply the reduced penalties to individuals already in prison. The policy takes effect next month.

Making room for faith: Handling religious expression at the office

February 4th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

A California appeals court dealt another blow to health plans over their policy cancellation tactics.

The 4th District Court of Appeal unanimously said insurers have a responsibility to make sure patients’ policy applications are complete and accurate before issuing coverage — not after expensive claims come in the door. Judges said plans cannot revoke patients’ policies unless they fully investigate pre-enrollment forms up front or insurers show patients intentionally misled them.

December 14th, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Youths and young adults who experienced a major depressive episode (MDE) in the past year are more likely to have also used alcohol or illicit drugs for the first time in the past year, according to a recent analysis of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

Among youths ages 12 to 17 who had not previously used alcohol, those who had experienced a past year MDE were nearly twice as likely to have used alcohol for the first time in the past year as those who did not experience a MDE. Likewise, youths who experienced a MDE in the past year were more than twice as likely to initiate illicit drug use.

November 17th, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Young adults who have recently battled depression are at increased risk of starting to smoke cigarettes or initiating alcohol and other drug use, according to a report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
