Glenns Ferry Health Center used to attract international medical graduates looking for work. But the Idaho clinic is now struggling to hire IMGs and finds itself part of a national crisis facing rural health centers.
The clinic has one full-time physician and two locum tenens who run the center’s three sites in the southern part of the state. Four doctors are needed, but two years of aggressive recruiting, including offering higher salaries, have generated no new hires, putting the clinic on the verge of closing one of its offices. That would leave patients, especially Medicaid mothers who rely on the center for prenatal and delivery services, few alternatives.

Physicians increasingly are talking about prescribing hormone therapy for recently menopausal women. Meanwhile, regulators are cracking down on claims about compounded formulations, according to statements issued in January.
With regard to traditional hormone therapy, the American Assn. of Clinical Endocrinologists published on its Web site last month a position statement saying this strategy is safe for women who are younger than 60 or who are less than a decade past menopause and is a viable option for those experiencing symptoms related to this life change.

The U.S. House of Representatives plans to vote today on a revised children’s health bill that addresses some of President Bush’s concerns about eligibility, the Associated Press reported Oct. 25.
The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) bill, previously vetoed by Bush, still calls for a $35-billion expansion funded by a 61-cent-per-pack increase in the federal tobacco tax. It also calls for parity coverage of addiction and mental health problems. But the revised measure would now exclude families earning more than three times the federal poverty level, and phase out eligibility for low-income childless adults.

Women seeking recovery from addiction often must also overcome a history of sexual abuse as well as the challenges of raising children, poverty, lack of education and other obstacles, the Lexington Herald-Leader reported Oct. 17.
Sexual abuse, domestic violence and depression can be both a cause and effect of alcohol and other drug use among women, experts say. One study estimated that 70 percent of female addicts have a history of sexual abuse, compared to 12 percent of men, including incest and sexual trauma as children or teenagers.

Funded with grants from the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), Illinois and seven other states are launching media campaigns aimed at preventing use of methamphetamine, the Tinley Park (Ill.) Daily Southtown reported Sept. 17.
The campaign includes ads in which speakers discuss the real-life consequences of meth use, such as a mother who lost custody of her son because of her addiction to the drug. The ads are funded with $10 million in federal money, and are also intended to let viewers know that addiction treatment is available. They target viewers ages 18 to 34.
