Depressed medical residents make six times more medication errors than residents who are not depressed, according to a U.S. study published online Feb. 7 in the British Medical Journal.
“Depression is a significant problem for residents as well as for their patients,” said lead study author Amy Fahrenkopf, MD, MPH. “The fact that it’s a problem for both needs to be addressed.”

As big-name national retailers and pharmacy chains continue to open in-store clinics, a familiar face soon may enter the fray as well — your local hospital.
Wal-Mart recently announced plans to partner with community hospitals across the country to open up 400 new retail clinics inside its stores by 2010, in addition to the 55 it already houses. Thirteen of those are owned and operated by hospital systems.

A California appeals court dealt another blow to health plans over their policy cancellation tactics.
The 4th District Court of Appeal unanimously said insurers have a responsibility to make sure patients’ policy applications are complete and accurate before issuing coverage — not after expensive claims come in the door. Judges said plans cannot revoke patients’ policies unless they fully investigate pre-enrollment forms up front or insurers show patients intentionally misled them.

The Food and Drug Administration is contemplating the establishment of a class of medications that would be available only after counseling from a pharmacist but without a physician’s prescription. Physicians widely oppose the development, arguing that it could disrupt continuity of care and put patients at risk.

In a case legal experts say signals heightened state scrutiny of physician arrangements with imaging facilities, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is suing at least two MRI clinics for allegedly paying doctors kickbacks for patient referrals.
The state case focuses on a type of leasing agreement the federal government also has put under the microscope in recent years. Under the arrangements, doctors lease time on imaging equipment for a discounted rate, versus paying the MRI owner per scan. The physician or the diagnostic testing facility then bills for the full amount of the service, and the referring doctor gets the difference.
