The Hawaii Board of Education voted unanimously this week to reject Gov. Linda Lingle’s plan to require school teachers to submit to random drug tests, leading Lingle to threaten to repeal pay raises for teachers unless the board reconsiders, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported Jan. 26.

An upcoming HBO series on addiction is being viewed as a unique opportunity to educate the public about a disease that affects more than 22 million Americans — and many more family members — but is widely misunderstood.?
The 14-part HBO documentary series is the linchpin of the “Addiction” project, but it’s far from the only component. A collaboration between HBO, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the campaign also includes a companion book, a comprehensive addiction information website at HBO, and a national community-outreach program coordinated by Join Together, Faces and Voices of Recovery, and Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA). A four-DVD version of the documentaries will be sold for a minimal price at retail outlets and online.

State medical board leaders are exploring a new way to assure the public that physicians retain skills throughout their careers. But some doctors say the boards’ plan is just more busywork.
Board leaders are working on an initiative to expand the requirements for maintenance of licensure, a process in which doctors demonstrate continued competence at the time of relicensing. In most states, physicians can maintain their licenses just by having no disciplinary actions against them and by completing a minimum number of hours of continuing medical education.

Some state medical boards are scrambling to regulate services at medical spas across the country to ensure that patients are safe and that physicians perform or supervise certain procedures properly.
Boards are taking action as the number of spas continues to grow. There are more than 1,000 in the United States, offering services such as laser hair removal, chemical peels, Botox injections and microdermabrasion in resort-like settings. Typically, a physician or other licensed health care professional has an ownership interest, is on staff or provides supervision at the spa, board officials said.

Texas Medical Board leaders hope to have a new process next year to handle minor violations that some physicians complain cost them too much time and money to resolve.
If the plan is approved by the board after hearings, violations such as failure to release medical records would be handled in a streamlined process, likely within 30 to 60 days.

The only state medical board in the country with policy declaring physician participation in executions “a departure from the ethics of the medical profession” and grounds for discipline was rebuked in state court late last month.
Wake County (N.C.) Superior Court Judge Donald W. Stephens ruled that the North Carolina Medical Board overstepped its authority in threatening to punish doctors who take an active role in the death chamber. But executions in the state will not resume due to the pending cases of five North Carolina death-row inmates on lethal injection protocols.
