Washington — As research findings coalesce around a collection of risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease, it is becoming obvious that poor and minority populations — the ones most likely to harbor risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes –also are more likely than whites to encounter this brain disorder.

Addiction, Mental Health Problems Linked to Long-Term Displacement Among Hurricane Survivors

Rates of post-storm addiction and mental-health problems among Hurricane Katrina and Rita survivors can be directly correlated to how long they were displaced from their homes, according to new research from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The study found that while most survivors displayed great resiliency after the storms, the rate of addiction and mental-health programs was much higher among those who had been forced from their homes for two weeks or more.

Cannabis Use Disorders Among College Students

Nearly one in ten first-year college students at a mid-Atlantic university have a cannabis use disorder (CUD), according to a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) funded study of drug use conducted by Center for Substance Abuse Research (CESAR) investigators.

First-year students attending new student orientation were randomly selected to participate in a multiyear follow-up study. Overall, 9.4% of first-year students met the clinical definition for cannabis abuse (5.4%) and/or dependence (4.0%).

Smoking Among Patients With Alcohol or Drug Use Disorders

An Ohio man whose house was robbed had more than $400,000 confiscated by the FBI as a result of an investigation of the crime, the Lima News reported Dec. 18.

Luther Ricks Sr. said the money, which had been stored in a safe and eluded the thieves’ grasp during a summer 2007 break-in, was his life savings. But officers from the Lima Police Department who were investigating the robbery seized the money and turned it over to the FBI. Now, the agency is telling Ricks he must prove he earned the money legally if he wants it back.

Alcohol Increases Libido Among Fruit Flies, Study Finds

A local law making marijuana offenses the lowest law-enforcement priority in Seattle has resulted in fewer drug arrests, but black residents are still being arrested in disproportionate numbers, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Jan. 8.

Far more whites than blacks live in Seattle, but more black residents were arrested and charged with marijuana offenses in 2006 than whites, according to a report from the Marijuana Policy Review Panel, which is responsible for monitoring implementation of the law.

Smoking, Illicit Drug Use Declines Among 8th-Graders, NIDA Reports

The annual Monitoring the Future survey finds declining use of cigarettes and illicit drugs among 8th-graders that signifies “an ongoing cultural shift among teens and their attitudes about smoking and substance abuse,” according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

NIDA said that the 2007 survey found considerable declines in lifetime, past-month, and daily smoking among 8th-graders. Daily smoking rates fell to 3 percent, down from a peak of 10.4 percent in 1996.

Marijuana Use Tops Cigarette Smoking Among Canadian Youth

The average Canadian youth smokes their first cigarette at age 12, takes their first drink at 13, and tries illicit drugs at age 14, according to the Canadian Center on Substance Abuse (CCSA).

The CanWest News Service reported Sept. 5 that a report entitled Substance Abuse in Canada: Youth in Focus also found that 83 percent of 15- to 24-year-olds either were current drinkers or had consumed alcohol within the previous year.
