Advocates Say Recovery Services Program Threatened

The Recovery Community Services Program (RCSP) — a grant program that funds peer recovery support services for individuals with alcohol and other drug problems –? could be on the chopping block, and advocates for addiction recovery are mobilizing to convince the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to continue funding the program.

Hawaii School Board Rejects Drug Testing, Sparking Threat from Gov.

The Hawaii Board of Education voted unanimously this week to reject Gov. Linda Lingle’s plan to require school teachers to submit to random drug tests, leading Lingle to threaten to repeal pay raises for teachers unless the board reconsiders, the Honolulu Star-Bulletin reported Jan. 26.

Toys Recalled for Child Drug Threat

Chinese-made toys made with a chemical that converts to gamma hydroxyl butyrate (GHB) when ingested have been pulled from store shelves in the U.S. and Australia after at least five children were hospitalized, the Associated Press reported Nov. 7.

The toys, called Spin Master Aqua Dots in the U.S. and Bindeez in Australia, are popular arts-and-crafts beads that can be arranged in designs and stuck together when sprayed with water. A chemical coating on the beads metabolizes to GHB if the beads are ingested, possibly causing unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma, or death.

Federal funding cuts could threaten public health progress

Washington — The nation’s public health system is much better positioned to respond to emergencies than it was five years ago, say local administrators. But they fear recent federal funding cuts will undermine their gains.

Officials point to funding increases that arrived in the post-9/11 era as a big reason for the improvements. Events in the fall of 2001 served to highlight the role public health plays in defending the United States, but departments nationwide struggled to meet the challenge and resorted to such tactics as shifting personnel from disease control to contend with anthrax-tainted letters.
