An Ohio man whose house was robbed had more than $400,000 confiscated by the FBI as a result of an investigation of the crime, the Lima News reported Dec. 18.
Luther Ricks Sr. said the money, which had been stored in a safe and eluded the thieves’ grasp during a summer 2007 break-in, was his life savings. But officers from the Lima Police Department who were investigating the robbery seized the money and turned it over to the FBI. Now, the agency is telling Ricks he must prove he earned the money legally if he wants it back.

Major League Baseball is supposed to have random, unannounced drug testing of players, but team officials are routinely notified in advance about the arrival of testing experts, the New York Times reported Oct. 31.
The lawyer for the Major League Baseball Players Association, Michael Weiner, said that, under the league’s drug-testing program, “our players do not get advance notice about tests.” But testing officials call club officials in advance in order to make arrangements such as getting parking passes. One club official said that he knows about testing up to two days in advance, and that trainers are informed so that they can set up for testers in the team’s clubhouse.

The New Jersey Board of Education has beefed up regulation of schools that conduct student drug testing, but won’t require schools to send all drug tests to costly state-licensed labs, the Newark Star-Ledger reported Nov. 8.
The new regulations will still allow school nurses to conduct drug tests, but will require schools to provide more training and oversight. Schools also would have to adhere to rules governing student notification of testing results. “This is insurance that there is a basic floor of training and accuracy,” said Barbara Gantwerk, assistant commissioner in the state education department. “We don’t believe this undermines it, but provides a uniform consistency throughout the state.”

Citing lax security and procedures, undercover investigators said that it would be easy for truckers to cheat on mandatory drug tests required by federal law, NBC News reported Oct. 31.
The U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) sent agents to 24 drug-testing sites using fake truck driver’s licenses and found that three-quarters failed to restrict items that could be used to adulterate urine samples. Agents were able to buy drug-masking kils online and use them at testing sites without being caught. “Every drug-masking product went undetected by the drug-screening labs,” the GAO report added.

Drug testing has only a minimal deterrent effect on high-school athletes’ use of steroids, according to a new study.
The New York Times reported Oct. 18 that researcher Linn Goldberg of the Oregon Health & Science University and colleagues compared self-reported drug-use rates at 11 Oregon high schools — five with random drug-testing, and six that don’t require drug testing of student athletes.
