An investigation into how a UnitedHealth Group subsidiary determined reimbursement for out-of-network physicians across multiple insurers alleges to show a pattern of underpricing services to shift the payment burden from insurers to patients.
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo on Feb. 13 announced his intent to sue United, after a six-month investigation focusing on its Ingenix subsidiary. Ingenix operates a database used by most insurers to determine the so-called usual, customary and reasonable rates for physician services.

Washington — The American Medical Association’s campaign to raise awareness of the nation’s 47 million uninsured and to help address the problem is going nationwide.
The three-phase initiative kicked off in August 2007 with $5 million in advertising in Washington, D.C., and in the early presidential primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. This year the campaign will spend about $15 million to spread the AMA’s message across the country using print, television, radio and Internet ads; healthy lifestyle events; mobile billboards; and profiles on the popular social networking sites MySpace and Facebook.

On any given day, about 1.2 million American teens smoke, 631,000 drink alcohol, and 586,000 use marijuana, according to a new study from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Reuters reported Oct. 18 that the report was based on a variety of previously published studies, notably the National Survey on Drug Use.
