Most Democratic Presidential Candidates Support Needle Exchange

A survey by the AIDS Project of Central Iowa found that most of the Democratic candidates for president said they would support needle exchange programs to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS among injection-drug users, Medical News Today reported Nov. 30.

Each candidate was asked, “Do you support access to sterile syringes, as a means of protecting public health, by lifting the ban on federal funding for syringe exchange?” Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Barack Obama, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, former Sen. John Edwards, and Sen. Joseph Biden all answered “yes” to the question.

“Free” EMR system comes with fee for support services

Oklahoma will no longer offer a loan repayment program intended to encourage physicians to practice in the state’s rural communities. But health care advocates say it was a small sacrifice because state lawmakers agreed to continue funding three other — much larger — programs that help rural communities attract primary care physicians.

Public Support for SCHIP High, But May Not Be Enough to Sway Lawmakers

A new survey finds that 70 percent of Americans support a bill in Congress that would add $35 million in new funding to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), but some observers say that public support is not strong enough to change the minds of lawmakers who back President Bush’s veto of the measure.
