Hepatitis Risk from Sharing Crack Pipes

Canadian researchers say that drug users face the risk of contracting the Hepatitis C virus if they share crack pipes with other users, Psysorg.com reported Dec. 12.

Researchers studied 51 crack users in Toronto, collecting crack pipes shortly after use and testing both the users and pipes for Hepatitis C. Twenty-two users tested positive for the disease, and one of the crack pipes tested positive for Hepatitis C (HCV) antibodies.

Sharing liability: A growing way to handle the risk

When Lancaster, Pa., neurosurgeon John A. Gastaldo, MD, saw his medical liability insurance premiums double through his regular carrier, he searched for alternatives. With a limited number of insurers doing business in the state five years ago, options were scarce.

Dr. Gastaldo, though, found a way. In 2003, he and some colleagues in the same predicament decided to self-insure by forming their own risk-retention group: Central Pennsylvania Physicians Risk Retention Group Inc.

Single Mom Found Guilty of File-Sharing, Owes $222000

Jammie Thomas, a Minnesota single mom, ordered to pay $220,000 after being found guilty of illegally downloading copyrighted music is loudly voicing her own opinion about the case, including plans to appeal the decision. Ms. Thomas has decided to fight back and appeal the verdict announcing the decision on CNN and on her MySpace.com page. She said in her blog that her attorney and she plan to appeal the verdict based on the federal jury’s finding that making the songs available online violates the copyright.
