Diabetes guidelines: Screen more people earlier

Washington — Stopping diabetes before it starts is the aim of several new recommendations intended to help physicians in the fight to curb the spread of the disease, which affects 7% of the population.

Screening more widely for patients with prediabetes and stepping up preventive measures for those who have started down the path toward type 2 diabetes are among the suggestions made recently by the American Diabetes Assn.

Physician Screening for Alcohol Cost-Effective but Underutilized

An Ohio man whose house was robbed had more than $400,000 confiscated by the FBI as a result of an investigation of the crime, the Lima News reported Dec. 18.

Luther Ricks Sr. said the money, which had been stored in a safe and eluded the thieves’ grasp during a summer 2007 break-in, was his life savings. But officers from the Lima Police Department who were investigating the robbery seized the money and turned it over to the FBI. Now, the agency is telling Ricks he must prove he earned the money legally if he wants it back.

Health Plans’ Requirements for Mental Health and Substance Use Screening

By a 3-2 vote, the Utah Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission delegated its rulemaking authority to the state legislature on several key issues, the BYU NewsNet reported on Nov. 19.

These issues include whether alcoholic beverages should be sold only in state liquor stores, and labeling requirements for malt beverages and alcohol-infused energy drinks.

Early autism screening urged, but barriers exist

Doctors widely praised new guidelines that call for screening of all young patients for autism and for medical homes for children with this diagnosis. However, some physicians said financial realities and inadequate access to follow-up care could interfere with implementation.

Screening in Doctor’s Offices Reveals Youth Drug Problems

Voters in Denver appear to have approved a ballot question that would require police to make enforcement of marijuana-possession laws their lowest priority, the Rocky Mountain News reported Nov. 7.

Question 100, backed by the group Safe Alternatives for Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER), was being approved by a 5-to-4 margin, election observers said, although balloting was incomplete.

More Schools Using Breath Tests to Screen Students

A growing number of high schools nationally are using breath tests to detect alcohol use among students attending football games, dances, and other extracurricular activities, USA Today reported Oct. 15.

Bill Judge, an attorney who advises schools on the use of drug testing, says that thousands of schools are now conducting alcohol screens using Breathalyzers and other breath tests. “It’s increased dramatically,” he said. KHN Solutions, which markets Breathalyzers, says orders from high schools have risen 120 percent annually over the past four years, and other sellers also report rising orders.
