Schools urged to police financial ties

April 14th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Better vigilance is needed to ensure medical research on human subjects is not flawed by financial conflicts of interest, according to the Assn. of American Medical Colleges and the Assn. of American Universities.

In March, the two organizations issued a report that calls on medical schools and research universities to put into place conflict-of-interest policies within two years. Such policies should cover how to identify, evaluate and manage financial conflicts, the report said.

Students lose empathy for patients during medical school

March 17th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

It only takes a year to start draining empathy from future physicians, according to a study of medical students in the March issue of Academic Medicine. But empathy is a key quality medical schools should promote, experts said, because it makes for better physicians.

“We know as a medical community that really good communication skills with patients help the patients to comply with the instructions of the physician,” said lead study author Bruce W. Newton, PhD. “It puts them more at ease with the physician, a bond of trust is established, and if something unfortunately goes wrong, if you have this bond and communications skills, you are much less likely to be sued.”

Obama’s School Friends Don’t Recall Much Drug Use

February 12th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Barack Obama has acknowledged using marijuana and cocaine as a young man, but interviews with old friends and classmates find few who remember the presidential candidate as much of a drug user, the New York Times reported Feb. 9.

Former classmates from Obama’s high school and Occidental College, which he attended between 1979 and 1981, described Obama in mostly positive terms, with some saying he occasionally smoked marijuana but none recalling any cocaine use.

January 14th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Officials who accredit medical schools are busier than usual these days. The creation of new campuses and the expansion of existing ones has accreditation agencies hopping as state officials and medical educators seek more physicians to prevent a shortage.

In 2007, seven allopathic medical schools were in various stages of the accreditation process. Five osteopathic schools won provisional accreditation, which allows them to start admitting medical students.

School Pays to Increase Friday Classes, Curb Student Drinking

January 9th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

The University of Iowa is offering extra funding to departments that schedule more Friday classes, as part of an initiative to curb student partying that increasingly begins on Thursday nights and continues through the weekend, the Wall Street Journal reported Jan. 7.

Currently, only about 1,400 classes are held on Fridays at the school, compared to an average of 2,400 from Monday to Thursday. Students and faculty agree that the lack of Friday classes encourages an early start to weekend revelry. “Sometimes a Thursday will definitely beat out a Saturday,” said sophomore Greg Meyer, 20.
