Tweaking Mouse Genes Can Prevent Opiate Dependency, Researchers Say

Barack Obama stated support for marijuana decriminalization in 2004 but has backed off that position during the 2008 presidential campaign, the Washington Times reported Feb. 1.

While running for Senate in 2004, Obama told a group of Northwestern University students, “I think we need to rethink and decriminalize our marijuana laws. But I’m not somebody who believes in legalization of marijuana.”

Researchers Bind Cocaine to Cholera to Create Vaccine

Researchers in Texas are binding cocaine to deactivated cholera proteins to create a vaccine that fools the body into attacking cocaine molecules, thus making the drug ineffective, the Associated Press reported Jan. 1.

Researchers Tom and Therese Kosten of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston recently requested Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to begin a multi-institutional trial of the vaccine, as early as this spring.

Amygdala is Link Between Addiction, Mental Illness, Researchers Say

If all currently illicit drugs were legalized only a relative handful of Americans would try drugs like cocaine or heroin, according to a Zogby poll sponsored by a drug-policy reform group.

A poll of about 1,000 likely voters ages 18 or older found that only 0.6 percent replied “yes” when asked, “If hard drugs such as heroin or cocaine were legalized, would you be likely to use them?” Ninety-nine percent answered “no,” and 0.4 percent said they were not sure.

Researchers Say Drug Use Akin to Traumatic Brain Injury

Users of ecstasy and methamphetamine exhibit signs of brain damage similar to that suffered by victims of traumatic brain injuries, according to researchers at the University of Florida? (UF).

A five-year study found that using these drugs can cause a chemical chain reaction leading to cell death in the brain, memory loss, and other potentially permanent problems.

Prozac Can Help Teens with Co-occurring Addictions, Mental Illness, Researchers Say

Thousands of prisoners convicted of crack-cocaine offenses could see their sentences cut and be released from prison if the U.S. Sentencing Commission makes recent changes in sentencing guidelines retroactive, the Los Angeles Times reported Nov. 12.

A new policy aimed at equalizing penalties for crack and powder cocaine, if applied to past as well as future offenders, would cut an average of about two years off the sentences of 19,500 federal prisoners, which would result in the release of about 2,500 prisoners.

CDC researchers have developed new tools using GPS technology and PDAs to help prevent the spread of malaria in Africa, according to a study published in the August issue of the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, InformationWeek reports. Researchers used the devices to collect data on the use of insecticide-treated nets in homes in Niger and Togo.
