Rose Wine Supplants Alcopops

More drinkers — especially women — are sipping ros?© wine rather than swilling alcopops, Reuters reported June 20.

In Great Britain, demand for ros?© — fermented from skinless red grapes — has risen between 30 and 40 percent in recent years, and experts see demand rising in the U.S. and Canada, as well. “The girls who were drinking Bacardi Breezer and Smirnoff Ice have matured,” said Paul Waller of Carlsberg UK. “People are trying different things. Consumers have got more sophisticated.”

Calls for Regulation of Hallucinogenic Plant

Salvia divinorum, a powerful hallucinogenic plant related to the common sage, is being used by some teens in the United States and the United Kingdom, who videotape their experiences and post them on YouTube, BBC News Magazine reported on Nov. 1.

The plant is legal, but some say it’s a potentially dangerous substance that must be regulated. The plant has been used by Mexican shamans for thousands of years, but now is being sold in both the U.S. and Europe, legally.?

A faster way to recover from chemotherapy and marrow transplant

Researchers at Children??™s Hospital Boston report finding a new way to increase stem cells in blood, suggesting a possible treatment to help patients who undergo chemotherapy or bone marrow transplant for leukemia and other cancers recover their immune function more quickly. In the June 21 issue of Nature, they demonstrate that a stable analog of prostaglandin can enhance the blood-forming system, both during embryonic development and after it??™s been damaged.
