Making room for faith: Handling religious expression at the office

A California appeals court dealt another blow to health plans over their policy cancellation tactics.

The 4th District Court of Appeal unanimously said insurers have a responsibility to make sure patients’ policy applications are complete and accurate before issuing coverage — not after expensive claims come in the door. Judges said plans cannot revoke patients’ policies unless they fully investigate pre-enrollment forms up front or insurers show patients intentionally misled them.

Vaccines get a boost: Global market increases profitability of making vaccine

Vaccines are hot. “The global vaccine market is set to double by the year 2016, fueled by unprecedented product innovations and global recognition of the benefits of immunization,” said Michael D. Decker, MD, MPH, vice president for scientific and medical affairs at vaccine manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur, USA.

Routine HIV testing making slow inroads

Susan Margletta, MD, a family physician in Norcross, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta, tests her patients for HIV if the slightest hint suggests that they could be carrying this virus. But does she offer to screen everyone ages 13 to 64 as recommended by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines? No. She is not convinced it is worth it.
