Senate to act on Indian Health Service funding

Washington — The Senate is poised to vote on new funding for the Indian Health Service that includes plans to combat a doctor shortage. But President Bush says he would veto it over cost and Medicaid documentation concerns.

The Indian Health Care Improvement Act of 2007 would authorize $35 billion from 2008 through 2017 for the IHS. The bill would establish doctor retention and recruitment bonuses of up to $25,000 and fund demonstration programs to recruit new physicians to the IHS. The agency’s physician vacancy rate is currently 13%. The measure also would:

McKinsey Report: Indian drug market to reach $20B

Here is another story on the growth of medical technology consumption and production in emerging regions. A few days ago we had a related post (Trends in Global Pharmaceutical Manufacturing). According to the McKinsey report, the rural health services sector will provide significant growth in the demand for pharmaceuticals.

Anheuser-Busch Asked to Fund Indian Treatment Center

Officials at the alcohol-plagued Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota are calling on brewer Anheuser-Busch to fund an addiction treatment center, the Associated Press reported Sept. 19.

Four small stores in Whiteclay, Neb., near the technically “dry” reservation sell 4 million cans of beer each year, mostly to reservation residents. The group Nebraskans for Peace and some members of the Oglala Sioux tribe have set up roadblocks to confiscate alcohol in cars heading back to the reservation from the stores, and also protested outside the offices of the local Budweiser distributor.
