A commercial space flight industry is working to make the adventure and romance of space travel available to the general public — or at least to those with $200,000 or more to spare.
Space tourism, still in its embryonic stages, has some experts estimating that 10,000 to 15,000 people a year will fly in orbital and suborbital space in the next decade.

Doctors agree on the basic tenets of medical professionalism, but they frequently fail to live up to those ideals in practice, according to a survey of more than 1,600 physicians in the Dec. 4 Annals of Internal Medicine.
Nearly all of the physicians surveyed agreed doctors should use medical resources appropriately, tell patients the truth, minimize disparities, see patients regardless of their ability to pay, maintain board certifications, evaluate peers’ care, avoid sex with patients, work on quality initiatives, disclose conflicts of interest, report impaired or incompetent physicians, and report medical errors.

Honolulu — Frustrated by Medicare pay cuts, representatives to the AMA House of Delegates directed the American Medical Association to call for national legislation to allow physicians to bill patients for costs Medicare doesn’t cover.
At its Interim Meeting last month, the house adopted policy directing the AMA to devote its political and financial resources to initiate a measure at the appropriate time that would allow Medicare balance billing. The policy calls for introducing legislation that would end budget-neutral restrictions inherent in a Medicare physician payment structure that interferes with patient access.

After months of secret negotiations, the Bush administration announced that it will seek $500 million from Congress for a joint anti-drug campaign with the Mexican government, the Washington Post reported Oct. 23.
The money would be used to buy helicopters, communications gear and inspection equipment, and pay for training and canine units in Mexico as that country’s military and police battle powerful drug cartels. The funding request will be included in a $46-billion supplemental budget request for fighting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The total aid package to Mexico would total $1.4 billion over several years, if approved.
