U.S. Drug Czar’s ‘Extreme Ecstasy’ Claim Disputed by Mounties

The leader of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s drug enforcement division in Canada reacted with astonishment to recent statements by U.S. drug czar John Walters about so-called “extreme ecstasy” being shipped across the northern border, the Canadian Press reported Jan. 21.

Walters issued a press release claiming that Canadian drug dealers were shipping ecstasy laced with methamphetamine to U.S. users, saying that 55 percent of seized ecstasy samples contained meth.

Drug Czar Raises Alarm About ‘Extreme Ecstasy’

U.S. drug czar John Walters recently warned that Canadian suppliers are shipping ecstasy pills laced with methamphetamine across the border to the U.S., the Windsor Star reported Jan. 4.

“Historic progress against ecstasy availability and use is in jeopardy of being rolled back by Canadian criminal organizations,” said Walters, director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). “Desperate to develop their client base, they are dangerously altering a product for which demand by youth and young adults had plummeted and are exploiting vulnerabilities along our shared border. This is alarming for the youth of both Canada and the United States.”

Similar Brain Areas Involved in Anorexia, Ecstasy High

Both the eating disorder anorexia and the club-drug ecstasy appear to involve the same serotonin receptor sites in the brain, according to French researchers.

Reuters reported Oct. 3 that researcher Valerie Compan of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Montpelier found that the disease and the drug both activate the 5-HT4 receptor sites, part of the brain’s reward system and located in the nucleus accumbens.
