Similar drug-name pairs nearly double 2004 tally

April 7th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

One physician’s faxed order to discontinue hydrocodone, marketed as Anexsia, was misread by the pharmacist as an order to discontinue Arixtra, an anticoagulant. Another doctor intended to electronically order clonidine, an antihypertensive, but accidentally ordered the sedative clonazepam because both appeared as “CLON” on the computer screen.

2008 NIH budget nearly flat — again

January 14th, 2008    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Washington — For the fifth consecutive year, the National Institutes of Health budget will fail to keep pace with growth in the cost of conducting biomedical research, research groups said.

On Dec. 26, 2007, President Bush signed a $555 billion fiscal 2008 domestic spending package, one week after the House and eight days after the Senate adopted the measure. While the nearly flat NIH budget left research advocates warning that the U.S. edge on biomedical research is eroding, community health centers were thankful for an increase.

November 22nd, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Youths and young adults who binge on alcohol raise their risk of developing myriad serious health problems later in life, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, Newswise reported Nov. 20.

Early autism screening urged, but barriers exist

November 12th, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Doctors widely praised new guidelines that call for screening of all young patients for autism and for medical homes for children with this diagnosis. However, some physicians said financial realities and inadequate access to follow-up care could interfere with implementation.

The American Academy of Pediatrics issued the recommendations in two reports presented at its National Conference and Exhibition in San Francisco last month. The documents appear in the November Read the rest of this entry »

U.K.: Big Problems with Early Drinking

October 15th, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

A disproportionate number of people treated for alcohol overdoses in emergency rooms in Great Britain are under age 14, the Telegraph reported Oct. 8.

Of the 2,239 people under age 59 treated for alcohol problems during the past year, about one in seven was under age 14. “I can well believe these figures, it does not come as a surprise,” said Frank Soodeen of the group Alcohol Concern. “We have already seen that the amount 11 and 13-year-olds are consuming when they are drunk has doubled. This is an issue not just about the accessibility of drink for youngsters, but also the influences they encounter.”
