Diabetes trial stops treatment arm in wake of death risk

Washington — The halting on Feb. 6 of an arm of the large type 2 diabetes trial, ACCORD, sent shock waves through the medical community. The lower-the-better conventional wisdom for blood glucose levels was questioned when it was found that those getting the most intensive glucose-lowering treatments were more likely to die.

Diabetes guidelines: Screen more people earlier

Washington — Stopping diabetes before it starts is the aim of several new recommendations intended to help physicians in the fight to curb the spread of the disease, which affects 7% of the population.

Screening more widely for patients with prediabetes and stepping up preventive measures for those who have started down the path toward type 2 diabetes are among the suggestions made recently by the American Diabetes Assn.

“Whole patient” approach needed in diabetes care

Washington — Diabetes by itself is hard enough to manage effectively, but try adding another one, two or three chronic diseases, and the complexities escalate.

Plus, ineffective management of some of these other diseases may be standing in the way of good diabetes control. Researchers in a recent study recommended physicians consider the “whole patient” when devising treatments and advise patients that their chronic conditions may, in fact, be related.

In the Harvard study, women with a high intake of trans fats had a 40 percent higher risk
for diabetes. Listed as partially hydrogenated oil on food labels, trans fats are found in stick margarine, snack foods and store-bought baked goods.

In a recent Harvard study involving 85,000 women, 61 percent of the diabetes cases that developed during the 16-year study period could be attributed to excess weight. But you don’t have to be obese, according to scientists at Kaiser Permanent Center for Health Research Northwest in Portland, Oregon. “In our study, there were moderately and even mildly overweight people who got diabetes before age 45,” says lead researcher Teresa Hillier, M.D. “The risk of early on set diabetes rose by 6 percent for every five to eight pounds of excess weight,” she says.
