Ibuprofen may lessen benefit of daily aspirin

Patients taking ibuprofen for pain and aspirin to reduce their chances of a second stroke may not be receiving the full benefit of their prevention efforts, according to a study in The Journal of Clinical Pharmacology in January.

Researchers assessed the combined effect of these two drugs on 10 healthy volunteers and 18 others who were using the medications for pain relief and stroke risk reduction. The blood-thinning effect of the aspirin was blunted in the healthy participants, while those who were attempting to prevent a stroke appeared to be resistant to the effects of aspirin until ibuprofen was discontinued. Also, 13 people in the latter group experienced a stroke while taking these two drugs together over a 27-month period.

Hepatitis C Patients Warned Not to Use Marijuana Daily

Barack Obama stated support for marijuana decriminalization in 2004 but has backed off that position during the 2008 presidential campaign, the Washington Times reported Feb. 1.

While running for Senate in 2004, Obama told a group of Northwestern University students, “I think we need to rethink and decriminalize our marijuana laws. But I’m not somebody who believes in legalization of marijuana.”

Daily Drinkers Raise Risk of Breast Cancer

Women who consume alcoholic drinks daily face an increased risk of breast cancer, Reuters reported Sept. 27.

Researchers found that women who had one or two alcoholic drinks daily had a 10-percent increased risk of breast cancer, while risk of the disease rose 30 percent among those who had three or more drinks daily.
