More physicians backing national coverage — study

Washington — More physicians in 2007 supported the creation of government-financed national health insurance than in 2002, according to a new poll. However, physician organizations said that can’t be equated with support for single-payer health care.

Fifty-nine percent of 2,193 physicians surveyed last year backed the creation of “national health insurance” with a main goal of “financing health care for all U.S. citizens.” That’s an increase of 10 percentage points since 2002, according to the survey, published in the April 1 Read the rest of this entry »

Comprehensive Health Coverage Resource Center Launched

The Foundation for Health Coverage Education (FHCE) has launched a new Internet resource center that provides eligiblity and other information on more than 144 government-sponsored programs designed to help people who lack health insurance, PNN Online reported Jan. 18.

The? Coverage for All website and the group’s U.S. Uninsured Help Line (800-234-1317) helps individuals navigate local bureaucracy to get the services they are entitled to under the law. The site provides online access to applications for every state Medicaid, Medicare, and VA health program in the U.S.

Health plans push coverage options for Hispanics

While physicians in some states will see a break in their medical liability premiums next year, Maryland insurance officials are questioning a proposal by the state’s largest medical liability insurance carrier to issue a credit to its physician policyholders on Jan. 1, 2008.

In a Sept. 13 order, Maryland Insurance Commissioner Ralph S. Tyler halted Medical Mutual Liability Insurance Society of Maryland’s plans to pay a portion of a $68.6 million dividend to policyholders as a premium discount. The company allotted some of the money to reimburse the state because it subsidizes Medical Mutual’s premiums under a program set up in 2005 to ensure that doctors have access to medical liability insurance.
