Canadian Beauty Jessica Trisko is Miss Earth 2007

Jessica Nicole Trisko, 23, known for her intellectual prowess has been given an honour for her beauty and may have to put her PhD studies on hold to reign as “Miss Earth 2007.” Trisko, who stands 5??™10″ and weighs 135 lb., was crowned by Chile??™s Hil Hernandez, last year??™s Miss Earth. Trisko beat several dozen women to capture the title of Miss Earth, a pageant that celebrates environmental causes and the preservation of the Earth.

Canadian Harm Reduction Advocate is Honored

Psychologist Bruce Alexander, a Canadian researcher who has compared popular views of addiction to beliefs about demonic possession, has been awarded the Nora and Ted Sterling Prize for Controversy, the National Post reported Oct. 15.

The $5,000 prize, awarded at Simon Frazer University (SFU), celebrates those who take unpopular positions on a variety of subjects, from gun control to prostitution to genetically modified food. Alexander won on the strength of his advocacy for Vancouver’s “four pillars” approach to drug addiction, heavily criticized by U.S. anti-drug officials for its harm-reduction approach that includes needle exchanges and safe-injection facilities for drug users.

Canadian Parents Tolerate Teen Drinking

A new study finds that while most Canadian parents are accepting of the fact that their children will drink alcohol, they are unaware of many of the risks of teen drinking, the CanWest News Service reported Sept. 12.

The Ekos Research report also found that some parents buy alcohol or host drinking parties for their kids.

Marijuana Use Tops Cigarette Smoking Among Canadian Youth

The average Canadian youth smokes their first cigarette at age 12, takes their first drink at 13, and tries illicit drugs at age 14, according to the Canadian Center on Substance Abuse (CCSA).

The CanWest News Service reported Sept. 5 that a report entitled Substance Abuse in Canada: Youth in Focus also found that 83 percent of 15- to 24-year-olds either were current drinkers or had consumed alcohol within the previous year.
