Vt. Senators Say Boost Treatment to Cut Prison Costs

Increased community-based addiction treatment could help trim growing prison expenses in Vermont, according to a group of four Democratic members of the Vermont Senate.

The Vermont Press Bureau reported Jan. 17 that the lawmakers unveiled a plan to close down a prison in Waterbury, convert another to a women’s-only facility, and use a third as a program for offenders with alcohol and other drug problems. The broader overhaul of the state’s prison system would emphasize providing treatment to addicted offenders in community settings rather than sending them to state prisons.

Most Medicaid programs adopt modest 2008 pay boosts for doctors

Washington — Thirty-three states plan to increase their Medicaid payment rates for doctors in 2008. Many also are poised to expand eligibility and to use the program to cover more of the uninsured.

Next year will mark the third consecutive year during which at least two dozen states raised Medicaid physician reimbursements, according to an annual 50-state survey of Medicaid directors. It was released in October by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Health Management Associates, a health research and consulting firm.

Caffeine may boost acetaminophen risk to liver

Large amounts of caffeine may increase the risk of liver dysfunction caused by ingesting higher-than-recommended doses of acetaminophen, according to a study published in the Oct. 15 Chemical Research in Toxicology. The authors are urging patients to be more judicious with these substances, especially if they also imbibe alcohol.
