Calif. Assembly to Consider Drug Tests for Welfare Recipients

A high-school student born to a drug-using mom has proposed a law that would require welfare applicants in California to submit to testing for illicit drugs, and the state Assembly will soon be considering the proposal.

The City News Service reported Jan. 12 that R.J. Feild, a sophomore at Jurapa Valley High School in Mira Loma, proposed the law as part of a “There Ought to Be a Law” contest sponsored by Assemblyman John J. Benoit.

Infection control in your practice (AAFP annual scientific assembly)

The next big respiratory disease epidemic could be in the form of the annual flu or something more exotic. But it is coming, and doctors should change what their offices look like in order to ensure they don’t contribute to its spread. Plans also need to be in place to make it more likely that care will be provided to the usual cadre of patients along with those infected by this pathogen, whatever it may be, according to several presentations at the American Academy of Family Physicians’ annual scientific assembly last month in Chicago.

Prescription Drug Safety Measure Clears Assembly Committee

California bill will prod national decision makers, serve in lieu of federal policy if Congress fails to act

SACRAMENTO—The California Assembly Health Committee passed the Pharmaceutical Drug Information and Safety Act, SB 606 (Scott), today with all members present voting in favor of the bill. The measure will require pharmaceutical companies to disclose the results of clinical studies, meaning that doctors, patients, researchers and even industry competitors will gain access to information on the side effects and effectiveness of medicine currently on the market.
