NASCAR Driver Avoids Jail by Delivering Anti-Drug Message

NASCAR driver Aaron Fike reached an agreement with a Warren County (Ohio) judge to deliver anti-drug messages to youths in exchange for avoiding jail time in his arrest for heroin possession last summer, Associated Press Sports reported Nov. 27.

NASCAR driver Aaron Fike and his fiancee Cassandra Davidson was arrested in an amusement park parking lot in Cincinnati. After four months of rehabilitation, Fike presented a proposal to the judge to avoid jail time by going to schools and racetracks to deliver an anti-drug message.

PDFA Moves Anti-Drug Campaign Online

The Partnership for a Drug-Free America (PDFA) is increasing its use of the Internet to disseminate anti-drug messages to kids and parents while trimming its traditional advertising on broadcast television, the New York Times reported Sept. 28.

The PDFA’s Time to Talk initiative, for example uses a website — not TV ads — to encourage parents to talk to their kids about alcohol and other drugs. The project includes a partnership with Yahoo to facilitate communication with and among the target audience.

Some Mexicans Wary of New Anti-Drug Alliance with U.S.

Issues of sovereignty and control have some Mexicans worried about a proposed billion-dollar alliance with the U.S. to fight drug trafficking, the Austin American-Statesman reported Oct. 15.

The Bush administration has proposed spending $1.4 billion over two years to stem the tide of drugs flowing through Mexico into the U.S. But a long history of mistrust between the two nations makes cooperation tricky, and some Mexican politicians argue that the plan violates their country’s sovereignty.
