Doctors take another look at safety of hormone therapy

Physicians increasingly are talking about prescribing hormone therapy for recently menopausal women. Meanwhile, regulators are cracking down on claims about compounded formulations, according to statements issued in January.

With regard to traditional hormone therapy, the American Assn. of Clinical Endocrinologists published on its Web site last month a position statement saying this strategy is safe for women who are younger than 60 or who are less than a decade past menopause and is a viable option for those experiencing symptoms related to this life change.

Revised SCHIP Bill Faces Another House Vote

The U.S. House of Representatives plans to vote today on a revised children’s health bill that addresses some of President Bush’s concerns about eligibility, the Associated Press reported Oct. 25.

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) bill, previously vetoed by Bush, still calls for a $35-billion expansion funded by a 61-cent-per-pack increase in the federal tobacco tax. It also calls for parity coverage of addiction and mental health problems. But the revised measure would now exclude families earning more than three times the federal poverty level, and phase out eligibility for low-income childless adults.

Another Billionaire for Global Health

As we have discussed before on this blog, philanthropy is becoming a major influence in the global health arena unlike at any other time in our history (see a previous post on the Gates Foundation here and the recent influx of over $250 Million for global health education here). Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York and multi-billionaire, may be aiming to ramp up his philanthropic efforts after he leaves office. Health related excerpts from the news release below:
