Drinking Games a Growth Business
An ever-growing number of drinking games aimed at college-age drinkers are hitting the marketplace, and more entrepreneurs are looking to cash in, ABC News reported Sept. 21.
Paper cups and ping-pong balls have been replaced with a variety of high-tech drinking games on college campuses and elsewhere. Examples include specialized dice, games involving roulette wheels, and drinking games based on the cartoon “Family Guy.” The latter orders players to drink when characters on the show take certain actions.
Most games are variations on the venerable “beer pong,” however.
Many manufacturers are small companies, often entrepreneurs who came up with the ideas for their games while drinking. The company Bing Bong, for example, was founded by two Penn State graduates and has sold more than 10,000 folding beer pong tables for $69 to $120 each.
When bigger companies have gotten involved in the market, they have faced harsh criticism for promoting binge drinking.
The products are typically sold online and at stores like Spencer’s. Some manufacturers refuse to advertise in college newspapers out of concern about marketing to underage drinkers.
