At least 24 states are already considering bills or are expecting measures to be introduced this year. Measures address issues such as independent practice, doctor supervision of nurses, prescribing authority, or extended prescribing, including of controlled substances.

Measuring out medicine (book excerpt: The Surgeons: Life and Death in a Top Heart Center)

December 2nd, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

While the match is made by a computer, the decision whether someone actually gets on a list, and his medical urgency classification, is made by local transplant committees. At Columbia-Presbyterian, the adult transplant coordinating committee meets every Friday morning, chaired jointly by Yoshifumi Naka [MD, PhD], the transplant surgery program director and Donna Mancini [MD], a professor of medicine and director of the Center for Advanced Cardiac Care, who oversees transplant cardiology. There are usually about 30 people around the table — transplant cardiologists, social workers, psychiatrists, infection specialists, neurologists, surgeons, transplant nurses and others. Most of the cardiologists are from Mancini’s section, but very occasionally an outside cardiologist may attend as well, to help advocate a listing for one of his patients.

The Uganda Millennium Village

November 21st, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

One of the Millennium Villages is just down the road from Mbarara.  I have known this, kind of, since my first visit to western Uganda in 2005.  But this past Sunday several of us, led by a friend working for the UN in Mbarara, drove the hour or so up a tortured dirt road into the highlands of Isingiro district where residents with assistance from various local and regional governments and international funding, are working to improve their way of life.

The lowdown on locum: The ins and outs of temporary assignments

November 12th, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Toni Cordell’s surgery would be “an easy repair,” her doctor said. Embarrassed at being a slow reader, she signed the informed-consent papers she was given without understanding them.

She said no one, including her doctor, explained the procedure in detail beforehand or uttered the word “hysterectomy.” Cordell didn’t discover the nature of her operation until months after surgery when an office nurse inquired about her recovery.
