The heiress and Mischa Barton’s ex were celebrating a friend??™s birthday at Guy’s nightclub on Tuesday night. Us Weekly magazine reported partygoers claimed Hilton and Whitestarr frontman Adler were spotted smoking the illegal weed and kissing at Guy’s Nightclub.

Americans appear to have struck an odd compromise on marijuana, with most believing the drug should remain illegal but wanting prohibitions against its use lightly enforced, the Denver Post reported Sept. 18.

Producing and distributing marijuana still carries big penalties, but a number of U.S. communities have limited police authority to prosecute minor marijuana offenses, and even more have legalized medical use of marijuana. Denver residents will go to the polls in November to vote on whether to make marijuana possession the city’s lowest law-enforcement priority.

When it comes to low back pain, physicians generally advise exhausting nonsurgical options before resorting to surgery. But a new study shows that for degenerative spondylolisthesis with spinal stenosis, surgery provides significantly better results than nonsurgical alternatives.

The study, published in the May 31 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, is the second in a series reporting findings of the Spine Patients Outcomes Research Trial (SPORT), a five-year, multicenter study supported by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), a part of the National Institutes of Health.

Rep. Jim Ramstad (R-Minn.), a nine-term member of Congress and longtime supporter of addiction treatment and recovery issues, has announced that he will retire at the end of his current two-year term in office, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported Sept. 17.

Ramstad, himself a recovering alcoholic, said he was “burned out” but also expressed his desire to see addiction and mental-health parity legislation passed in Congress before he leaves office next year.

A new study from PIRE’s Behavioral Health Research Center finds that drunk-driving recidivism declines when offenders are sent to DUI courts and ordered to wear electronic monitoring devices and sell their cars, but experts say that it remains unclear exactly what makes the courts effective.

Funded with grants from the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), Illinois and seven other states are launching media campaigns aimed at preventing use of methamphetamine, the Tinley Park (Ill.) Daily Southtown reported Sept. 17.

The campaign includes ads in which speakers discuss the real-life consequences of meth use, such as a mother who lost custody of her son because of her addiction to the drug. The ads are funded with $10 million in federal money, and are also intended to let viewers know that addiction treatment is available. They target viewers ages 18 to 34.
