March 29th, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

With Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Parker, Colo., one step closer to becoming the only for-profit, accredited medical school in the United States, it is generating controversy in the medical community.

In August, the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation awarded the school provisional accreditation. Once fully accredited, it will join the ranks of 149 public and private medical schools in the U.S. All those institutions are nonprofits.

Medical metal detector finds lost orthopedic screws

March 29th, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Inspired by the device used to find lost coins in the sand, Johns Hopkins undergraduates have invented a small handheld metal detector to help doctors locate hidden orthopedic screws that need to be removed from patients’ bodies. The device emits a tone that rises in pitch as the surgeon moves closer to the metal screw. It also serves as a surgical tool to guide the removal of the hardware.

China and Global Health

March 21st, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Partly because of my recent visit to Beijing I am fascinated by what is happening in/with China. In addition, because China is now front and center stage and because they play such an important role in the lives of those living not only in the West (see living without “Made in China”, via Treehugger; Amazon book) but for those in various regions (see Africa and China) there are substantial implications to what happens in China on many important levels (global business & finance, global health, global environmental conditions). Loophole Hinders Enforcement of R.I. Social Host Law

March 19th, 2007    Posted by: Dr. Dobson

Rhode Island’s social-host law, designed to prevent underage drinking parties, has been hobbled by language that limits its application to the host’s “residence,” thus excluding drinking in backyards or other locations on private property.

East Bay Newspapers reported Sept. 25 that lawmakers are trying to revise the bill to close the loophole. “This is supposed to be about the host who is holding the party and making alcohol available to underage kids,” said Rep. Jan Malik, the cosponsor of the original legislation who is also working on the revision. Now, says Malik, “if you hear the police are coming over, you just run into the backyard.”
