HBO’s ‘Addiction’ Series Wins Emmy Award

HBO’s vaunted 14-part documentary “Addiction” has won an? Emmy award? from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The series was honored with the Governors Award, the Academy’s highest honor, which is given in recognition of programming that demonstrates commitment to important social causes. The other 2007 Governors Award winner was American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back” segment.

Historic Prescription Drug Discount Legislation Signed

SACRAMENTO—Members of the OURx Bill of Rights Coalition gathered in the state Capitol this morning to applaud Governor Schwarzenegger’s signature of AB 2911 (N??ez/Perata), the California Discount Prescription Drug Program. The coalition, comprised of more than a dozen groups representing consumers, the AIDS community, seniors and communities of color, sponsored the bill in the legislature this year.

Estrogen in young postmenopausal women linked to less arterial plaque

New results from a substudy of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) Estrogen-Alone Trial show that younger postmenopausal women who take estrogen-alone hormone therapy have significantly less buildup of calcium plaque in their arteries compared to their peers who did not take hormone therapy. Coronary artery calcium is considered a marker for future risk of coronary artery disease.

Entecavir (hepatitis B drug) leads to cross-resistance with HIV drugs

Treating hepatitis B patients with the drug entecavir can cause those who are also infected with HIV to become resistant to two of the most important drugs in the anti-HIV arsenal, according to a new report in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Cross-resistance alarms raised earlier this year by Johns Hopkins researchers about a widely used antiviral therapy for hepatitis B liver infections have prompted swift treatment revisions by the drug??™s maker and governmental agencies.

From KaiserNetwork: ???Researchers Use GPS, PDAs for Malaria Prevention in Africa, Study Says???

CDC researchers have developed new tools using GPS technology and PDAs to help prevent the spread of malaria in Africa, according to a study published in the August issue of the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, InformationWeek reports. Researchers used the devices to collect data on the use of insecticide-treated nets in homes in Niger and Togo.

Another Billionaire for Global Health

As we have discussed before on this blog, philanthropy is becoming a major influence in the global health arena unlike at any other time in our history (see a previous post on the Gates Foundation here and the recent influx of over $250 Million for global health education here). Massachusetts health reform builds momentum

Washington — Kelly Tondo and her husband have had health insurance on and off for several years, beginning in 2001 when he left his job to start an espresso machine company.

The Tondos, of Methuen, Mass., tried a family policy through their local chamber of commerce, but the monthly price nearly doubled from $932 in 2004 to $1,735 this year. They tried catastrophic coverage, but it only took care of emergencies.
